Overdue Update (In Brief)
(October 2005)

Well it has, indeed, been a while since this page (among others) has been updated.  Lauren and Kyle are grown now; off to college.  Which leaves Vickie and Scot "temporary empty nesters" these days.  One of the best parts about our current stations in life is that... Everyone's happy and where they're supposed to be right now.  Lauren's currently a senior at William & Mary and Kyle's currently a freshman at JMU.  So, except when they're home on a break, Vickie and Scot are more back to being Vickie and Scot instead of mom and dad these days and very, very glad that we've stayed best friends through everything for all these years...

The earlier Interest entries will be left below, for old times' sake if nothing else:

Base-a-ball Ben Beddy, Beddy Good to Us!
(Remember that line from Saturday Night Live?)

Little did we know how much fun (and commitment!) we were in for as a family, that late-summer day in 1994, when Vickie took Kyle to register for the local youth baseball league's T-ball division.  "Baseball in the Fall?", queried Scot when Vickie said Kyle wanted to sign-up.  "You don't play baseball in the Fall!"  "They have a fall and a Spring season", she replied.   "The Fall season is more... developmental.  This way, Kyle won't be completely inexperienced when the Spring season starts next year."

Well, suffice to say that, many "seasons" later, dad got more than overruled on signing-up for "Fall Ball"; especially after Kyle displaced the team manager's own son as first baseman (Probably the most critical defensive position in T-ball.  After all, somebody has to be able to catch the ball at that age when another seven-year-old throws it at/to them!) after just two games.  Oh, and their team also finished in first place!

Many Spring and Fall seasons later, Kyle's added numerous All-Star Team selections, two league championships and a "3rd in the State" Babe Ruth League finish to his accomplishments on the diamond and at the plate.  Mom's been the official scorekeeper on his teams for most seasons and dad has been assistant coach, head coach or manager most as well.  Lauren...  Big sis gives Vickie a break from scorekeeping during the games and was known by the other parents for her willingness and expertise at being able entertain Kyle's teammates' younger siblings that got drug to the games and practices.

In all, that's well over 200 baseball games that the family has played "together" in, and enjoyed.  We do take a break from youth league baseball occasionally of course... and go to see the Major League Orioles games in Baltimore, at Orioles Park at Camden Yards!

Our Favorite Things to Do in and Around the Area

bullet

Alexandria Red Cross Waterfront Festival   Every year we look forward to spending an entire weekend at this annual "Fest" benefiting the Red Cross.  Who could resist?  Mid-June sunshine and warm evenings, live music, food and beverage vendors, arts and crafts booths, on the river, nightly fireworks displays (Big ones!), visiting tall ships, canoe rides, people everywhere!  Most importantly though, its a time for friends to spread their blankets on the grassy knolls of historic Alexandria, Virginia's Oronoco Bay Park and reunite!

Busch Gardens Williamsburg  Another annual family outing includes a trip to Busch Gardens Williamsburg - "The Old Country".  What a blast we have.  Even the rides and other attractions that we enjoyed in previous years only get better and bring more smiles and laughter when we revisit them.  As a bonus, we can count on the folks there to have added another major roller coaster or something just as fun each year anyway.  Wanna' tip for when you go there...?  Pay the extra few dollars for the premium parking pass!  It'll save you time getting to and from the entrance gates.  But what's really best about it is the footsteps it can save when you're heading back to your car, after walking the Park all day!  About a 2.25 hour drive from Alexandria.

"Roman Rapids" at Busch Gardens Williamsburg-

A colossal white water adventure... but don't bring anything that
you wouldn't take to a Roman bath, because you will get wet on this ride.

Virginia Beach  Yes!  Vacation time and here's where you'll more than likely find us.  Great oceanfront hotels, great seafood restaurants, great beach, great surf (for the mid-Atlantic U.S. ...), no jellyfish and plenty of nearby historic and entertainment attractions for the chance rainy or overcast days, or day three or four of our vacation week when we've had enough sun exposure and need a break.  Only about a 3.5 hour drive from Alexandria.

Our Family Tree

First of all, if you're interested in keeping track of "Who married who?" and "What was grandpa's first wife's maiden name?", etc. ... and you have a computer... Then you have to get a software program designed for genealogical record keeping.  We use Family Tree Maker, and find it very simple to use and understand.  There are many features within it that we don't even use, but we are able to look up the answers to questions like those posed above.  We purchased the Deluxe edition a few years ago and its cost was less than $50 or so.  Well worth the money...

With the software, we were able to take all those little scrap pieces of paper and matchbook covers that had been collected over the years, which had family members' birth and death dates on them, etc., and enter the data into the computer system.  We then went back and "filled in the gaps" by asking relatives for their input.   Subsequently, we're able to go back seven generations - back to the mid-1700's - and see our ancestry on paper.  Output can be in report and graphical formats.   You can even scan and attach pictures to family members' records, so that someday when you might want to pull-up some info on ol' uncle so-and-so and add that he was in the Civil War, you'll be able to see his face right there; without having to go find that shoebox or album of pictures somewhere in your bedroom closet.

All that being said about how we maintain our family tree information, here's a little about what we know so far of our ancestors:

Scot's parents were of the last names Bryant and Gillum (maternal side).   For seven generations back, they were all born in Virginia.  Vickie's parents were of the last names Tiller (paternal) and Byrd (maternal).  Again, all from Virginia back to the late 1700's.  Sound unexciting, as in:   We don't yet know from where nor when they came over on the boat?  Well, yes; but only a little.  Mostly we find it very exciting to know that our roots are so deeply planted in what we already consider the best state in the U. S.!

More about our ancestry when time permits...
